I know Dunnhills is long gone, replaced by Marzano's Wood Fired Italian and I only dined at Dunhills once as I never lived in Illinois & was just visiting the area but that was exactly ten years ago today for a special friend's birthday. It was a terrific meal & actually the largest porterhouse steak I ever ate in my life. Place was a bit noisy with one boisterous large group sitting next to us but when I asked the waitress to move us to a quieter corner she promptly did so. Good meal, great company. Too bad they went out of business. I rate it a 4.9 for the memory. Gosh, 10 years now… where does time fly. |

Glad the place is gone.....we lost a VERY expensive pill box(solid gold) there, and they denied finding it despite knowing it was left there. The (then) manager got all shifty eyed and nervous when asked about it. Gave it the evil eye every time we drove past. |

We chose Dunhills as a special restaurant after our son's graduation from Middle School. Our reservation for 9 people was at 9:00 and we ate approximately around 11:00. The restaurant was nearly empty, yet we had to wait 2 hours for our less than mediocre food. When we approached the wait staff to ask why it was taking so long, we were met with rudeness and unexplained hostility (really not the response one would expect). We then asked to speak to the manager. When we asked him to explain why everything took so long when the place was nearly empty (2 other tables), he explained he was the "co-owner", had been in the business for over 20 years, and had never received such a complaint for this restaurant. Research Dunhills in McHenry and you will see more negative reviews than positive. This restaurant is WAY overpriced and has horrible service...run terribly, even the hostess is rude. I have no idea how this restaurant is still open. Living in the area, it was only after I shared my horrible experience that
I found out many others have had the same issues. Do yourself a favor and pick a much better restaurant, don't waste your money...not worth the frustration. |

A Wednesday night, 9:00, after a graduation with 9 people. MAYBE 3 tables with customers when we walk in. We walked out at 11:00 having, without a doubt, the worst service I have ever had. We tried asking Peter, the manager and co-owner, why it was taking so long, but he was intent on telling us that he's been in the restaurant business for 20 years, and this is what to expect when you have a large group. Oh, really? I can count on both hands which fine restaurants can accomodate large groups in half the time. Save yourself a trip and go elseware. |

Went there on Valentine's Day (Monday Night) and even though the dining room was only 1/2 full they did not have enough staff on hand. Waitress was nice but had too many tables to cover and had to be asked 2-3 times to get anything. In addition there was a 1/2 hour wait between the salads and the entrées which were serve warm and looked like they had been sitting under the kitchen heat lamp way too long. There were 7 of of us with a total dinner bill over $400 and when I e-mailed management about the above mentioned issues I received a nice & quick reply to my e-mail that they would make it right with a gift card that was in the mail. A few days later it arrived in the amount of $25...WOW...a whole $25..keep it..my recommendation is to stay with proven fine dining establishments like Smith & Wollenski, Ruth Criss or Wild Fire..this place is not ready for prime time. |
